Faith in Action: Friends of the Marian Shrine Visit the Sick

On Friday, 14 August 2026, on the eve of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and our Annual Rosary Carnival, representatives of the Friends of the Marian Shrine visited patients at Godfrey Okoye University Teaching Hospital, Enugu.

The visit was more than a charitable gesture; it was a quiet pilgrimage to Christ present in the suffering. With words of encouragement, prayers, and financial support, we sought to remind the patients that illness may weaken the body, but it does not diminish the dignity of the human person or place anyone beyond the reach of God’s love.

Our Blessed Mother did not keep the grace she received to herself. Having conceived Christ, she “went with haste” to serve Elizabeth. Following her example, we believe that authentic Marian devotion must move beyond prayers and processions into compassionate service. The Rosary we hold in our hands must ultimately become love expressed through those same hands.

As we prepared to celebrate Mary’s glorious Assumption, this visitation reminded us that no celebration of faith is complete if the sick, the suffering and the vulnerable are forgotten. In every hospital ward, Christ still says: “I was sick, and you visited me” (Matthew 25:36).

We remain deeply grateful to every member, friend and benefactor whose generosity made this outreach possible. Through your support, hope entered a hospital ward, a burden was lightened, and someone was reassured that they had not been forgotten.

May Our Blessed Mother, Health of the Sick and Comforter of the Afflicted, intercede for every patient we encountered, strengthen their families and caregivers, and obtain for them healing, courage and peace.

For the Friends of the Marian Shrine, charity is not separate from our devotion—it is devotion made visible.

Ave Maria!
